Common breeding objectives for big productivity gains

Wednesday 4th of July 2012

Key results from using ASBVs:

  • ASBVs are combined with visual assessment to select rams.
  • Estimated potential productivity gains of up to $9.40 per ewe per year based on the corresponding gains of GRASS Merinos in the areas of fleece weight, fibre diameter and body weight.
  • Buying rams from a source with similar breeding objective results in rapid gain.

Sourcing genetics using the same objective selection indexes as their ram supplier has resulted in significant productivity gains over the last 10 years for Merino breeders Alison and JB Tancred, from ‘The Maze’ Gulargambone.
