Selection of sires

Selection of sires has been based on principles that will maximise the value of our research results, enabling us to better identify DNA markers, validate phenotypic tests and develop new genetic tests and tools. It is not our intention to try to produce the best or ideal sheep, rather a diverse range of phenotypes. The breeds chosen cover major breeds; sires from other breeds may be selected in future years.

Principles for selecting sires:

The breed is already well represented in a Sheep Genetics database to maximise linkages and data flow-on.
The sire is already included in the Sheep Genetics database (some exceptions will be made to obtain specific phenotypes).
The sire should exhibit superiority in one or more traits (but may be inferior in others; this will help us to achieve diversity without specifically choosing inferior animals).
The sire is preferably young to maximise its further impact across the database (some older sires with superior Australian Sheep Breeding Values (ASBVs) and strong linkages already in industry will also be used).

Look up a sire's ASBVs

As the Information Nucleus is not a breed or a sire comparison, but research to develop new and improved genetic tools and tests for wider industry, the Sheep CRC will not specifically report information about individual sires. However, each sire naturally accumulates data that is entered into Sheep Genetics. If you would like to see the ASBVs for a particular sire, you can do so, following these steps:

Look in the sire table above for the SIRE ID of the ram you wish to search.
Copy the SIRE ID (highlight it with your mouse and press CTRL C), then go to MERINOSELECT (for Merinos) or LAMBPLAN for other breeds.
Choose SEARCH,
Paste the SIRE ID (from the table above) into the box after Animal Id (place cursor in box and press Ctrl V)
Press SEARCH
Once the animal and its data are shown, you can click on the animal ID for more information, including pedigree and the actual measurements recorded.
