Using eID for Sheep Management & Breeding Course

This short course is designed for sheep breeders to increase their understanding of the technology, data collection and analysis. Participants will develop the skills and confidence to effectively implement eID within their enterprise. By the end of the course participants will have developed an eID plan for their enterprise. The course is structured in three one-day sessions and a one-on-one meeting over a three month period to maximise knowledge retention, skills development and practice change. The program involves professional facilitation of discussion groups, practice by doing, on-farm demonstration and teaching others.

Objectives

The objectives of the course are to:

  • Review the use of eID tags within the sheep enterprise
  • Understand the challenges associated with eID and the solutions
  • Set objectives for a sheep enterprise and evaluate its current use of eID
  • Increase understanding of data capture
  • Manipulate and interpret data
  • Define management strategies to effectively utilise this information
  • Provide the producer with resources and contacts for trouble shooting, data collection and manipulation
  • Refine the use of data within the supply chain.

Day 1 Optimizing data collection using eID

  • Individual animal management
  • Accuracy and labour savings
  • Equipment
  • Collection Problems and Solutions
  • Contract services that are using eID
  • Introduction to Pedigree Matchmaker and Walk Over Weighing (WOW)
  • Developing an Enterprise eID Plan


Day 2 Yard – Office - Yard

  • Data Collection - Yards
  • Data management options
  • Operational software
  • Moving Data – one software program to another
  • Problem –Solution: Data manipulation
  • Group data manipulation
  • Prepare data for drafting/culling
  • Physical drafting based on data selection
  • Integrate data with Auto-drafter in yards
  • Continue Enterprise eID Plan


Individual Session – One on One Contact - addressing your individual needs

  • Review Enterprise eID Plan
  • Discuss solutions to the major limitations to the implementation of eID in your enterprise


Day 3 Implementing eID data collection within your enterprise

  • Review topics covered
  • Discuss equipment, data capture and data management issues
  • Role of eID in the supply chain
  • Complete Enterprise eID Plan
